SHAH ALAM, Selangor: For the Chinese community, Chinese New Year is not merely a festive celebration but also symbolises new beginnings and togetherness with loved ones.

Singer and actor, Joshua Gui, said the celebration provides an opportunity to reconnect and strengthen family bonds.

He said whenever the festival arrives, he and his relatives would gather to prepare steamboat dishes together to welcome the new year.

“Chinese New Year also marks the beginning of spring, a symbol of renewal and fresh starts, but for me personally, its greatest meaning lies not in the symbolism, but in the opportunity to sit at one table, have long conversations and spend quality time with family,” he told BERNAMA today.

Meanwhile, analysis supervisor, Leong Hymm, 25, said this year’s celebration felt more special as it was the first time he could shop for the festivities after starting work.

Leong, who lives in Klang, said Chinese New Year is not just a celebration but also an important time to reunite with family members.

“I only meet most of my relatives once a year because they are working too. So, this festive season gives us the chance to meet, share stories, and spend time together,” he said.

Private sector employee, Tan Mei Sha, 36, said although this year’s celebration was more challenging due to rising costs, she remained enthusiastic about preparing special dishes for her family.

For her, Chinese New Year should serve as a turning point for renewal in life and for building shared prosperity within the community.

“It is not just a new year celebration, but a symbol of renewal, prosperity and family unity, as it is also a time for us to forgive one another, appreciate our loved ones, and spread joy,” she said. – BERNAMA
