KUCHING: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has been appointed as the honorary deputy commissioner of the Civil Defence Force (APM) Sarawak, marking a significant step in his service to the community.

The appointment letter was presented to him by Maj. (CD) Wan Khairul Zakwan Wan Tajudden, the Kuching District Civil Defence officer.

Expressing his gratitude, Chong anticipated that this new role would enable him to actively support APM during emergencies, particularly during flood situations in the Kuching area.

“APM’s unwavering commitment to handling emergencies, especially floods in Kuching, deserves our appreciation,” Chong said upon receiving the Honorary Officer Appointment Certificate from APM at the Civil Defence District Office (CDDO) here.

Looking ahead, Chong emphasised the importance of bolstering collaboration between his Service Centre and APM, not only during crises but also in conducting awareness training sessions for the public on handling potential emergencies effectively.

“This training is vital as it equips the public with the necessary skills to respond appropriately to emergencies, irrespective of where they occur—be it at home, school, or the workplace,” he said.

During the same event, Lt. (CD) Mohd Zaidi Mohd Ali from the Disaster Operations and Training Unit explained APM’s diverse roles beyond flood management, encompassing tasks such as snake catching, firefighting, and assisting in lost pet cases, underscoring the multifaceted nature of APM’s contributions to community safety.
