PADUNGAN assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen was ejected from the one-day special Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Monday (Jul 7).
The ruling was made by DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohammad Asfia Awang Nassar after the former refused to sit down and tried to interject during the debate by Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang.
Asfia instructed the sergeant-at-arms to escort Chong out of the Chamber.
The incident occurred following a shouting match between Chong and Lo when debating the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Members) Bill, 2025.
Earlier, while addressing the House, Lo claimed that Democratic Action Party (DAP) representatives Chong and Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong did not want Sabah and Sarawak to have one-third of the representation in Parliament in accordance with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
This was because of their refusal to support the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Members) Bill 2025, which seeks to increase the number of state seats.
He pointed out what he saw as a contradiction in the stance of the Padungan assemblyman.
“The Member of Padungan says he supports increasing Sarawak’s parliament seats, yet he opposes the increasing state seats right here in Sarawak.
“Once again, we see the typical double standard from DAP. Their arguments are not only inconsistent, they are fundamentally flawed,” said Lo.
Meanwhile, during a press conference held shortly after being ordered out of the House, Chong refuted Lo’s claim, calling it a false accusation.
“He (Lo) made a direct accusation, which is untrue, because both myself and Yong have spoken and made our stand very clear,” said Chong.
He reiterated that the Sarawak DAP fully supports increasing Sarawak’s parliamentary seats in Parliament.
“Go directly to the federal government and demand an increase in parliamentary seats.
“We will support that for the sake of Sarawak,” he said.
