KUCHING: About 600 people attended the Sarawak Day 2025 Ecumenical Prayer Service organised by the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) at the Christian Ecumenical Worship Centre (CEWC), Jalan Stampin, here on Thursday.

The annual event brought together devotees from various church denominations and racial backgrounds, in a show of unity and mutual respect ahead of Sarawak Day celebrations.

Present at the service were Stampin Member of Parliament (MP) Chong Chieng Jen, Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin, and Kota Sentosa Assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Yau Sin.

Among those in attendance included the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kuching, Archbishop Datuk Dr Simon Poh, and representatives from various Christian denominations, including the Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM).

The service featured praise and worship led by BEM, along with intercessory prayers and scripture readings conducted in multiple languages, namely Malay, English, Chinese, Iban and Bidayuh.

Prayers were offered for the Sarawak Governor, the Sarawak Government, the Premier, the Sarawak Cabinet, lawmakers, and all those in authority.

These prayers sought God’s guidance for leaders to continue working in harmony to uphold religious freedom, justice, liberty, political stability, unity and social inclusivity.

Additional prayers were dedicated to peace in the world, with calls for justice and righteousness to prevail globally.

A highlight of the programme was the ceremonial marching of the Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade, which marked the start of the prayer service.

The ecumenical service is held annually in conjunction with Sarawak Day, serving as a prelude to the official state celebration.

This year, Sarawak Day will be commemorated in Miri, with various programmes and activities scheduled in the days leading up to the occasion.
