KAPIT: A local unemployed man has pleaded guilty before Sibu Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Jan 13) for breaking into a house and stealing a chainsaw on Christmas Day last year.

The 25-year-old was charged with housebreaking and theft linked to an incident along Jalan Bukit Goram here.

Kapit police said the offence was believed to have occurred on Dec 25, 2025, when the suspect allegedly broke into the victim’s house through the rear window before fleeing with a chainsaw.

Acting on information, a police team managed to arrest the suspect on Jan 6 in Kapit town and recovered the chainsaw and a screwdriver believed to have been used in the break-in.

When the charge was read before Magistrate Romario Jonoi yesterday, the man pleaded guilty and the court fixed Jan 21 for sentencing.

Pending sentencing, bail was set at RM3,000 with two sureties, however, the man failed to meet the bail conditions and is being remanded at Sibu Prison.

In light of this, Kapit police reminded the public not to be involved in theft or other criminal activities that could bring harm to themselves.

Residents, especially those in the district, are urged to channel information with the police to help curb crime in the area.
