KUCHING: Police have arrested two local men over the theft of a Mitsubishi Pajero reported missing along Jalan Datuk Wee Khieng Chiang here late last month.
The case came to light after a 48-year-old man lodged a police report on December 28 after discovering that his vehicle, which had been parked in the area, was gone.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the theft was believed to have been carried out by two men who were seen using a Proton X50 during the incident.
Acting on gathered intelligence, the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) arrested the suspects, aged 51 and 58, in separate operations at Taman Hui Sing and Kota Samarahan on December 30.
Investigations later confirmed that both were involved in the case.
Kuching Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said the suspects have prior criminal records, including offences related to vehicle theft.
“Several items believed to be connected to the case were also seized to facilitate further investigations.
“Urine screening tests showed that one of the suspects tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, while the other tested negative,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine, upon conviction.
Alexson advised the public to remain vigilant and enhance the security of their vehicles at all times, as well as to promptly report any suspicious activities to police.
