KUCHING: The bravery and unwavering commitment of the district’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) personnel during a reckless vehicle chase that went viral on social media, have earned praise from the state’s top police leadership.
The incident happened on Jan 31 when a 35-year-old man with 20 prior convictions led officers on a dangerous pursuit from Jalan Kuching–Serian towards Jalan Penrissen flyover, ramming several vehicles in an attempt to escape arrest.
Viral footage captured the tense moment when a police officer clung onto the suspect’s moving vehicle, reflecting the extreme risks officers took to prevent further danger to the public.
Following the operation, Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner DCP Saifullizan Ishak met with the officers involved to personally convey his appreciation for their courage, swift action and unwavering dedication, which ultimately led to the suspect’s arrest after his vehicle rear-ended another car.
“The officers’ willingness to put their own safety on the line — including the one who was injured during the arrest — reflected the true spirit of “
‘Polis dan Masyarakat Berpisah Tiada’, which emphasises the close partnership between the police and the community in maintaining public safety.
“The incident showed the PDRM’s strong commitment to safeguarding public safety and maintaining peace in Sarawak,” he said.
Saifullizan also hoped that the officers’ actions would serve as an example and a morale booster for all PDRM personnel to continue serving with integrity, professionalism and courage.
In an earlier statement, Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said police had been tracking the suspect for his alleged involvement in a house break-in along Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho reported on Jan 30, and several motorcycle theft cases around Kuching.
The case is being investigated under Section 457 and Section 186 of the Penal Code for housebreaking with intent to commit theft and obstructing a civil servant in the discharge of duty.
