KUCHING: Sarawak was among the four states involved, with Kuching taking centre stage as several of its iconic landmarks were illuminated in the colours of the Jalur Gemilang.

The landmarks include the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) building, Satok Bridge, Darul Hana Bridge, the Musical Fountain, and a number of other prominent sites across the city.

In total, 10 iconic buildings across the four host states were lit up following Malaysia’s official receipt of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) flag during the closing ceremony of the Thailand 2025 SEA Games on Saturday at Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok.

The illumination in Kuching and the other host cities, including Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Penang, will continue for a week, extending into the New Year 2026 celebrations, symbolising the nation’s support and excitement for the 2027 SEA Games.

DBKU Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said the initiative reflects Kuching’s commitment and readiness as the host city for the opening ceremony of the 2027 SEA Games, while also expressing the pride of city residents in hosting the prestigious regional sporting event.

“This effort is expected to enhance the visibility of the Games at the national level, ignite the spirit of sportsmanship among the people, and foster a sense of pride in the state’s role as a co-host of this prestigious event.

“As Mayor, I hope this initiative will further enliven the spirit of sportsmanship and unity among the people, while strengthening Kuching’s image as a competitive, progressive city that is ready to host the 2027 SEA Games,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

He added that the implementation also answers the call of the Sarawak Government and the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MYSED) in ensuring the success of the 2027 SEA Games, while nurturing a spirit of togetherness, patriotism and strong support from all segments of society.
