SIBU: A civil servant lost over RM600,000 after falling victim to a non-existent investment scheme promoted on social media.
Sarawak Police Commissioner, Datuk Mancha Ata, said the victim, a woman in her late 40s, was browsing Facebook at home in early March when she came across an investment advertisement.
“The investment was offered by a company named ‘XGI HORIZONTAL’, which promised high returns within a short period,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He said the victim, who was drawn to the offer, began communicating with the company’s representative – the suspect – via WhatsApp.
“In this case, the victim, having been deceived, made several transactions in stages into a bank account provided by the suspect, amounting to approximately RM600,000.
“She only realised she had been scammed when the suspect continued to demand further payments,” he added.
Mancha said no returns were received as promised, even up to the time the police report was lodged.
He reminded the public not to be easily influenced by investment schemes offered on social media, and to carry out proper checks before making any financial commitments.
“The public is advised to verify the status of companies and websites via the official platforms – www.bnm.gov.my/BNM TELELINK 1-300-88-5465 (Bank Negara Malaysia) and www.sc.com.my / 03-6204 8999 (Securities Commission Malaysia),” he said.
