BAU: A woman in her early 40s here lost RM500 after falling victim to a scammer who impersonated a family member via WhatsApp.

Bau District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Haide A. Rahman, said the incident occurred on October 7 when the civil servant, who was at her government quarters, received a message from an unknown number claiming to be a relative asking to borrow money.

“Trusting the message, the victim made an online transfer to an unfamiliar bank account on the same day,” he said in a statement.

He added that the victim only realised she had been deceived the next day after reading a notice from her family member stating that their phone number had been misused by another person.

The case resulted in a financial loss of RM500.
