KUCHING: Civil servants should lead by example in supporting AirBorneo as they represent the government and play an important role in implementing its policies, says Kapitan Datuk Lau Sie Lok.
The Simpang Tiga Community Association President and Kuching Padawan Foochow Association chairman said he welcomes the Sarawak government’s directive requiring civil servants to prioritise AirBorneo for official travel.
He explained the directive is an important step towards strengthening Sarawak’s economy and tourism sector, adding that supporting the state’s own airline should go beyond mere compliance with an administrative policy.
“As Sarawakians, we should support our own airline.
“If civil servants do not prioritise AirBorneo, it will be difficult to encourage the public to do the same.
“Supporting local enterprises should be reflected through action, not just words,” he said in a statement.
Lau said the directive remained practical, as it allowed civil servants to use other airlines when justified by flight schedules, route availability or official requirements, subject to approval from the relevant superior.
“This shows that the government is supporting the growth of AirBorneo while ensuring official duties can still be carried out efficiently,” he said.
He added that many countries supported their national or home-based airlines because the aviation industry contributed significantly to economic development, tourism, employment and regional branding.
Lau also called on the business community and the public to choose AirBorneo whenever possible to help build a strong airline brand for Sarawak.
“With the support of the government, businesses and the people, AirBorneo can become a source of pride for Sarawak and contribute to the state’s long-term economic growth,” he said.
