SIBU: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian urged Sarawakians with the opportunity to contribute to the state’s development to return home and help strengthen and improve Sarawak.
He stressed that public service must be driven by a clear purpose, as only with such a mindset can a stronger and better nation be built.
“If more people are willing to serve with a clear vision and remain united for the greater good, Sarawak will continue to transform.
“Sarawak in 2025 is not the same as it was in 2015. And in the next five years, the state will undergo even greater changes — I can assure you of that,” he said at the 25th Anniversary Silver Jubilee celebration of the Lions Club of Sibu Pahlawan on Saturday night (Feb 22).
Dr Sim said that Sarawak was once underestimated, but today, it serves as an inspiration to others.
“Why do people look to us as an example rather than to Kelantan? It is because we have something valuable for them to follow,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, on the Lions Club of Sibu Pahlawan’s achievements, he highlighted that the club had produced two former district governors and a second deputy district governor currently in service — an impressive accomplishment which reflects its commitment to nurturing capable and visionary leaders.
“Among the club’s past presidents are outstanding entrepreneurs, successful business figures, and even emerging political leaders such as councillor Kevin Lau.
“This demonstrates the club’s ability to cultivate talent and develop leadership beyond the Lions community,” he said.
He added that the event was made even more special by the presence of all 25 past presidents of the Lions Club of Sibu Pahlawan, along with the district governors who served during their respective terms.
“This extraordinary gathering reflects the strong sense of unity and deep appreciation within your club. It is inspiring to see how you honour and value those who have laid the foundation for this club’s success.
“Being a president is not merely a responsibility — it is a meaningful journey of service, overcoming challenges, and growing together as a team,” he said.
Also present at the event were Lions Club International Director Zhao Dong and Dato Yeow Wah Chin, District Governor of Lions Clubs International 308-A2 Annie Ho Chui, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) Area Leader Datin Ellis Suriyati, and Lions Club of Sibu Pahlawan President Steady Tiau Kiu Ung.
