KUCHING: Sarawak is integrating climate action into its economic growth strategy, with efforts to reduce carbon emissions also creating new revenue opportunities for the state.
Energy and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said considerable progress had been made in climate change mitigation despite the ministry being only about four and a half years old.
“We have done quite a lot of work here, especially in mitigating climate change and also trying to monetise, capitalise and create new revenues for Sarawak.
“At the same time, we are also mitigating climate change and helping, at least in this part of the world, to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net zero by 2050,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the opening ceremony of the 21st International Conference on Environmental Ergonomics (ICEE 2026) here today (Aug 17).
He said environmental sustainability in Sarawak was intrinsically linked to the health and well-being of its people.
As such, he said Sarawak remained committed to balancing environmental stewardship with social well-being through science, innovation and collaboration as it pursued sustainable economic growth.
Dr Hazland said the growing impacts of climate change, particularly rising temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events, highlighted the close relationship between the environment and human health.
“These challenges affect health, safety, productivity and quality of life, reinforcing the need for evidence-based solutions that enhance human resilience in a changing climate,” he added.
