KUCHING: Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMS) has awarded a RM673 million contract to Sinoma Industry Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd for the construction of a new clinker plant at Mambong, marking a major expansion for its cement division.

The project will be undertaken by Cahya Mata Cement Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CMS, and involves building a 6,000-tonne-per-day clinker line—Line 2—at its integrated cement facility in Mambong, near Kuching.

Sinoma is a subsidiary of Tianjin Cement Industry Design & Research Institute (TCDRI), one of China’s largest cement industry equipment providers.

Notably, TCDRI was also responsible for CMS’s existing Line 1, completed in 1996 and still in operation today.

The engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contract was signed on July 21, following approval from the Sarawak Planning Authority. Construction is set to begin next month, funded through a mix of internally generated funds and external borrowings.

At its peak, the project will create up to 500 jobs and spur economic spillovers in Padawan and Kuching. It is scheduled for completion within 12 months, with clinker production to begin by April 2027 and full commissioning by June 2027.

Once operational, the plant will more than double Cahya Mata Cement’s annual clinker capacity—from 900,000 tonnes to 1.9 million tonnes—enhancing cost efficiency and phasing out the need for clinker imports. This is expected to significantly reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

“The Mambong clinker Line 2 is a key step in strengthening Sarawak’s cement supply chain, boosting capacity, reducing import reliance and ensuring we can meet future demand reliably,” said CMS group managing director Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman.

“Beyond production, it reflects Cahya Mata’s commitment to building a modern facility that positions us as possibly the greenest cement producer in the region.”

The new plant will incorporate state-of-the-art environmental technologies, including a waste heat recovery system that can generate up to 6MW of power and an advanced dust filtration system that reduces emissions to less than half the current regulatory limit.

Clinker Line 2 will also use high-efficiency equipment to curb energy consumption and carbon emissions, while integrating locally sourced alternative raw materials and fuels to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Cahya Mata Cement operates three grinding plants in Kuching and Bintulu, with distribution terminals in Sibu and Miri—forming an integrated supply chain that has supported Sarawak’s construction needs since 1974.
