KUCHING: Cahya Mata Sarawak’s (Cahya Mata) initiative to use recovery waste as an energy source and to produce eco-cement supports Sarawak’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the innovative approach is important in balancing the impact of carbon emissions and material usage in the production process, while also aligning with global policies to address climate change.

“And that is the material that we need now in order to balance the impact of carbon emission and also the materials that you use. In other words, net zero,” he added.

“That means you can balance and equalise the emission of carbon and the use of renewable material or sustainable material in the process of production.”

Abang Johari said this during the Cahya Mata Mambong Clinker Line 2 earth-breaking ceremony at the Mambang Integrated Plant here today.

He explained that Sarawak is in step with global policies on reducing carbon emissions, including efforts to develop hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels, which is recognised as the cleanest form of energy.

Although the cost of producing hydrogen is currently still high, he said technological advancements are expected to reduce these costs, including the discovery of new membrane technology in the electrolysis process by Mitsubishi in Japan.

He also revealed that by 2027, Sarawak will be the first in the region to have public transportation powered by hydrogen, particularly through its Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system.

“At the initial stage, many were sceptical, but as you know, anything new will always be met with skepticism,” he said.

“However, to introduce it (ART), a calculated approach must be taken if we want to adopt something new.”
