CMS marks Arbor Day by planting 2,500 tree saplings

KUCHING: Corporate citizen Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) teamed up with the Sarawak Forestry Department for a tree-planting initiative at the Sabal Forest Reserve on Saturday.

The event, held in conjunction with CMS’ inaugural Arbor Day celebration, involved the planting of 2,500 saplings comprising of high value indigenous species, such as belian, meranti, kapur and engkabang.

This activity brought together some 250 participants, including representatives from the department and CMS, lecturers and students from i-CATS University College, as well as members from the local communities.

CMS’ Arbor Day is a significant milestone for the company, highlighting the company’s commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship and also community engagement.

This initiative also corresponds with the Greening Sarawak Campaign led by the department.

“Today’s tree-planting activity contributes towards the cumulative number of trees planted under the ‘Greening Malaysia Agenda Through the 100 Million Tree-Planting Campaign from 2021 to 2025’,” said Deputy Director of Forests, Semilan Ripot.

On the progress of the Greening Sarawak Campaign, he said it had surpassed 35 million trees, a year ahead of schedule.

“The critical reason behind this effort is to address climate change, one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today,” he said.

Meanwhile, CMS’ Road Maintenance Division Chief, Raymond Ugay, reaffirmed the company’s dedication towards building a sustainable future.

“As a responsible corporate citizen, we recognise the importance of balancing economic performance with environmental stewardship,” he said

“Our participation in Arbor Day forms part of a broader sustainability journey.

“Through initiatives like this, we reaffirm our commitment to nurturing a culture of care for our planet, for our communities, and for future generations.” he said.
