KUCHING: This Chinese New Year, a short film titled “My Hometown, Through My Lens” has struck a deep emotional chord with audiences, touching over 76,000 hearts on YouTube.

The film’s powerful narrative of second chances, family bonds, and the importance of preserving traditions resonates with anyone who has ever faced uncertainty.

It speaks to those who have found strength through their roots.

At the heart of the film is Ah Bao, a documentary filmmaker who, after losing his job in Kuala Lumpur, returns to his hometown of Sibu.

Initially, he’s hesitant and reluctant to go back, sensing his life has taken a different turn. But his father’s persistent encouragement leads him to something unexpected: creating TikTok videos to promote their family’s Kompia business.

Through these videos, Ah Bao begins to rediscover his passion for storytelling, and in the process, he uncovers the charm, beauty, and rich history of Sibu, a place that holds the key to his own identity.

As he revisits the streets and landmarks of his childhood, Ah Bao feels the weight of his heritage, the warmth of his community, and the pull of something deeper than just a place—it’s a legacy that has been carried through generations.

The film beautifully weaves Ah Bao’s personal journey with the broader message of embracing family, tradition, and the courage to innovate.

His creative journey represents not just a new chapter for him, but also a way to keep the traditions alive and relevant for the next generation.

Director of the short film, Nova Goh, shared his inspiration, recalling a road trip he took to Sibu with his family last year.

“I went on a road trip with my family to Sibu last year, and the old town left a lasting impression on me.

“The people there hold onto their traditions so strongly—sometimes stubbornly. This film is my way of telling the story of those people.

“The lives of people’s stories, which I love to share, is my drive for making the film,” he told Sarawak Tribune over the phone recently.

Nova also shared that the concept for the film came to him in September last year.

“My Hometown, Through My Lens” isn’t just about one man’s journey; it’s about all of us finding our way back home—whether it’s to a physical place, a sense of identity, or a part of ourselves that we’ve lost along the way.

Ah Bao’s struggle is universal: the desire to succeed, to belong, and to make a difference. But it’s his ability to reconnect with his roots that allows him to transform his life.

The film’s message is clear: no matter how far we stray, there’s always an opportunity for renewal, rediscovery, and growth.

Throughout the film, Ah Bao learns that creativity isn’t just about making new things; it’s also about breathing life into what’s already there. By embracing his heritage and using his platform to share the stories of his hometown, he not only revitalises his family’s business but also his own purpose.
