DEBAK: A 2,000-acre coconut cultivation initiative here is expected to generate incomes of about RM6,000 monthly per household through export-oriented production using the pandan variety.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the initiative follows his visit to Agropark Tamang today (April 17), where he was briefed on the use of modern technology in coconut cultivation.

He said a company currently exporting coconuts from Bagan Datuk, Perak, to China would serve as the anchor buyer for the initiative.

“We asked this company to plant coconuts in Debak. It will serve as an anchor company that can purchase the coconuts.

“Villagers can plant on their own land and sell to the company, meaning they will have a guaranteed market,” he said at the ‘Majlis Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat’ programme at the DUN Saribas level here today.

He added that about 2,000 acres have been identified for coconut planting, with surrounding communities expected to participate by supplying produce for export.

Abang Johari said the initiative would introduce the pandan coconut variety, which produces higher yields and grows at a shorter height compared with conventional coconut trees.

“If one family plants the pandan variety and the company purchases the produce, their income can increase to at least RM6,000 per month,” he said.

He described the approach as part of efforts to modernise agriculture through new planting methods and stronger market access for rural communities.
