KUCHING: A Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month campaign will be organised at the Foyer of the Day Care Centre, Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) on March 8.
The campaign which starts at 9 am is held by the Colorectal Surgery Unit, under the General Surgery Department of SGH in conjunction with International Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month which is in March.
SGH in a statement yesterday said the campaign launching ceremony is expected to be officiated at by Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
“Cancer is one of the major causes of death globally and colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide after breast and lung. Cancer can be cured if detected early and treated effectively,” said the statement.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of colorectal cancer screening programmes and facilities available in the state as screening tests allow early detection and reduce mortality from colorectal cancer.
“It also aims to raise public awareness of early symptoms and risk factors of colorectal cancer and encourage people to seek early screening or detection.
“It will also increase awareness among Sarawak General Hospital staff of the colorectal cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment available at the Colorectal Unit of Surgical Department in SGH,” they said.
Activities during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign include Blue Ribbon Project featuring Mini booth displays and public exhibition at the Day Care Centre Foyer in SGH (March 8-9); Stoma Workshop at Dewan Pesona, SGH on March 17; and 1st Sarawak Ostomy Update 2023 at SGH CRC Auditorium.
