NEW DELHI, India: Pakistan Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has called a meeting of the National Command Authority (NCA) yesterday after the military began an operation against India.
The meeting will focus on national defence preparedness and strategic deterrence, as well as take stock of the evolving regional security situation, Pakistan media reported.
The India-Pakistan standoff on Saturday took a dangerous turn as Pakistan launched “Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos” to hit Indian targets following India’s aerial attacks on Pakistan’s major airbases, including the Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi near the army’s General Headquarters outside the capital Islamabad.
The NCA is responsible for overseeing Pakistan’s nuclear weapons programme and national security.
The ongoing conflict is the biggest military escalation between India and Pakistan in decades.
Amid global calls for India and Pakistan to de-escalate, the US secretary of state spoke to Pakistan’s army chief.
“Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir earlier today (Friday). He continued to urge both parties to find ways to de-escalate and offered US assistance in starting constructive talks in order to avoid future conflicts,” State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement. – BERNAMA
