KUCHING: Sarawak will fully enforce the federal government’s Speed Limitation Device (SLD) regulation on commercial vehicles starting October 1, in line with nationwide implementation efforts to enhance road safety.
Minister for Transport Sarawak, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, said the state is committed to the policy rollout, which will be implemented in phases across the country to ensure consistency and uniformity.
“This is a crucial policy that aims to enhance road safety and reduce the risk of serious accidents involving heavy vehicles. Sarawak, in line with the national directive, will fully implement the enforcement of SLDs as scheduled,” he said in response to media queries.
He called on lorry and commercial vehicle operators in Sarawak to cooperate with the authorities and prepare for the upcoming regulation.
“We must put the safety of all road users above all else. I appeal to transport operators in Sarawak to work together with the authorities to ensure their vehicles comply with the new SLD requirements,” he said.
“Only by working together can we build a safer and more responsible road environment.”
Acknowledging that the transition may pose challenges to industry players, Lee stressed that safety must take precedence over business costs or convenience.
Under the new regulation, SLD enforcement will be carried out in three phases starting Oct 1, applying to goods vehicles over 3,500 kg and passenger vehicles over 5,000 kg carrying more than eight passengers, with a maximum speed limit of 90 kilometres per hour for all affected vehicles.
Lee said the Ministry of Transport Sarawak will work closely with enforcement agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) to ensure operators are well-informed and guided throughout the implementation process.
“We remain committed to working in tandem with the federal government to raise the overall standard of commercial vehicle safety in Sarawak.”
