IGAN: The Sarawak government remains committed to ensuring that rural communities are not left behind in accessing quality and comprehensive basic amenities.
Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman), Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya said efforts to expand access to essential services such as clean water supply, electricity, and telecommunications are key agendas under the state’s inclusive development vision through Sarawak Maju Makmur.
“Interaction is crucial. If there are reports from residents, the relevant agencies must respond and vice versa.
“Accurate reports are vital to facilitate assistance from the appropriate authorities,” he said during a special briefing on utility services for Matu and Igan at the Igan Community Hall on Thursday (July 31)
Dr Juanda, who is also Jemoreng assemblyman, emphasised the importance of a two-way communication between the government and the people, particularly in addressing issues related to public services.
Earlier, he joined Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) director Awang Mohammad Fadillah Awang Redzuan and local community leaders on a working visit to the district’s water treatment plant.
The visit was aimed at inspecting the implementation of water supply projects that have been completed, are ongoing, or are in the planning stage. It also served to identify areas that require improvement in the existing infrastructure.
Community leaders (KMKK) were also given the opportunity to witness firsthand the operations of the water treatment plant and gain better insight into the role and functions of the state’s water supply system.
The subsequent special briefing session offered a comprehensive overview of current utility service statuses and development plans involving three key agencies — JBALB, Sarawak Energy Berhad, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Among the presentations were the water supply briefing by JBALB Mukah Division Water Engineer Abang Ismail Abang Selim, electricity supply briefing by Sarawak Energy Berhad Mukah Division manager Samuel Tang Wei, and telecommunications services briefing by MCMC Sarawak Region senior director Adiman Ajem.
Around 70 participants, including KMKK members and residents, attended the session that provides an important platform to relay the government’s latest efforts in enhancing rural infrastructure.
The visit reflected the close cooperation between government agencies, elected representatives, and the local communities in ensuring development projects bring direct benefits to the people.
