SIBU: The Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association remains committed to its core values of professionalism, efficiency, and inclusive service to all communities, regardless of race or background.
According to its president, Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming, the association has worked hand in hand with the Resident’s Office, District Office and various government agencies, serving as a vital communication bridge – both conveying government policies to the people and relaying community needs back to the authorities.
“We respond swiftly to emergencies such as fires and floods, mobilising relief efforts; during the pandemic, we distributed face masks and food supplies and assisted with vaccination drives, reaching out to both urban and rural communities.
“We organise anti-drug talks, screen educational films and set up awareness billboards to raise public consciousness – especially among youth – about the dangers of drugs.
“We also provide regular free rabies vaccinations to strengthen public health awareness and enhance community safety,” he said at the association’s installation ceremony and its 20th anniversary dinner which was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian on Monday.
Lau added that the association also actively promotes multicultural celebrations such as Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak, fostering unity and harmony among different ethnic groups.
“We also reach out to charitable organisations to support the underprivileged, building a caring and inclusive community,” he added.
He stressed that the achievements would not have been possible without the support and visionary leadership of the Sarawak Government, the collaboration of the Resident and District Offices, and the tireless dedication of all community leaders and committee members.
Meanwhile, on the newly elected committee members, Lau extended his congratulations.
“Your willingness to serve is commendable, and I am confident that under your leadership, our association will continue to thrive.
“Leadership comes with challenges, but having accepted this role, we must embrace it with dedication, integrity and a strong commitment to serving our community,” he added.
He stressed that the association would continue to uphold the belief that by uniting knowledge, efforts and compassion, a stronger, more inclusive community can be built.
“We will enhance our organisational capacity, optimise our service systems, and rise to the challenges of a new era. We will continue to contribute to the harmonious development of Sibu and the well-being of its people,” he added.
On the association, he said that the 20th anniversary celebration is a meaningful milestone – a time to reflect on the past and look ahead to the future.
“The association was established in 2005 through the initiative of the late Temenggong Tan Sri Dato Sri Tai Sing Chii, with the aim of uniting Chinese community leaders throughout Sibu, creating a platform for collaboration, enhancing coordination with the government, and improving overall service.
“Since I assumed the role of Temenggong and president of the association in 2009, I have had the privilege of growing alongside this organisation for the past 15 years.
“I’ve witnessed its journey from humble beginnings to steady growth, the transitions between successive boards, and above all, the growing trust and reliance from our community,” Lau said.
