KUCHING: Sarawak is ready to drive the nation’s tourism vision and support the aspirations of Visit Malaysia Year 2026 by emphasising the development of community-based tourism at the Kuching Waterfront.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the celebration clearly demonstrates that Sarawak is playing an active role in advancing the national tourism strategy as the new year approaches.

“This celebration is about Sarawak’s direction. It sends a clear message that Sarawak is not waiting for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 to begin.

“We are actively shaping how Malaysia moves into the annual campaign, with purpose, ambition and a long-term vision,” he said when met by TVS recently.

Abdul Karim stressed that the organisation of the event reflects Sarawak’s ability to combine creativity, innovation, culture, and event tourism into a compelling narrative that appeals to both locals and international visitors.

He pointed out that with elements such as a Guinness World Record recognition and international-standard performances, the event also elevates Sarawak’s reputation as a destination capable of hosting global-scale events.

“We want to show how Sarawak can transform a public event into a moment of national pride, while remaining relevant on the international stage,” he said.

Abdul Karim also commented on the choice of the Kuching Waterfront as the event venue, explaining that selecting an open, community-oriented area was appropriate as it reflects Sarawak’s identity as a region that prioritises inclusivity.

“Strong public support will foster a sense of pride and togetherness, which is crucial because the success of the tourism sector must be grounded in community, confidence and participation,” he said.

Visit Malaysia Year 2026 targets the arrival of 47 million international tourists and aims to generate tourism receipts of up to RM329 billion.

Last year, Sarawak recorded tourism receipts amounting to RM1.04 billion for October 2025.
