SIMANGGANG: The spirit of togetherness filled the air as the community gathered yesterday (Oct 12) for the 2025 Mooncake Festival and Cultural Performances organised by the Sri Aman Buddhist Association, featuring lively and vibrant showcases.

Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Datuk Francis Harden Hollis commended the organisers for their efforts in bringing the festival to life.

“The event featured a showcase of both traditional and modern cultural performances by youth and children members of the Sri Aman Buddhist Association. Energetic dances and songs highlighted elements of Chinese traditions dating back to the dynastic era, captivating the audience throughout the evening.

“Therefore, the success of this programme reflects the strong teamwork of the organising committee. Without such cooperation, it would have been difficult to hold an event of this scale,” he said when officiating at the event held at the Lee Ngee Mung Stadium, SJK(C) Chung Hua Simanggang here.

Harden, who is also Simanggang assemblyman, also touched on the meaning behind the Mooncake Festival saying that it symbolises unity in overcoming rulers during the Yuan Dynasty.

“The fall of the Yuan Dynasty led to the rise of the Ming Dynasty, known for its fair governance and popularity among the people.

“In the modern context, the Mooncake Festival remains a symbol of togetherness in Chinese culture, fostering solidarity and resilience in increasingly borderless information age,” he said.

He added that although the ways of celebrating the festival have evolved over time, its essence remains, serving as a joyous occasion that preserves tradition and introduces younger generations to cultural heritage.

During the event, Harden also announced an MRP allocation of RM5,000 for 2026 to the Sri Aman Buddhist Association to support its activities and provide spiritual counselling services to members and the local community.

Chairman of the Sri Aman Buddhist Association Foo Chin Sui, expressed his gratitude to Francis for attending, highlighting that his presence demonstrates continued support for cultural programmes that nurture heritage values among youth.

“Activities like these not only preserve our traditions but also help develop both mental sharpness and physical fitness,” Foo added.
