BELAWAI: Residents of Kampung Belawai and surrounding villages here have received a boost in health awareness and practical skills through the Unity in Health: Empowering Communities programme.

Kuala Rajang assemblyman Datuk Len Talif Salleh lauded the initiative organised by SEGi University, hailing it as a programme that brings positive change to local communities.

“This effort reminds us that education should not be confined to lecture halls but must also reach the people, serve them, and bring meaningful change to their lives,” he said during the officiating ceremony yesterday (Sept 6).

Len also highlighted the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases in Malaysia, particularly diabetes and hypertension.

“It is estimated that 3.9 million adults in Malaysia are living with diabetes, while in Sarawak, the prevalence of hypertension has reached 40.9 per cent – among the highest in the country,” he noted.

He stressed that health education, preventive measures, and early detection are essential to reducing the burden of disease.

He commended the strong team spirit of SEGi University, which included 30 medical students, five lecturers, and 10 support staff, including international students.

“Good health is the foundation of a strong and resilient society. We are united when we care for one another, promote healthy lifestyles, and offer mutual support,” he added.

Launched three years ago in longhouses across the Sibu Division, the programme has now expanded to Kuala Rajang, benefiting residents of Kampung Belawai and nearby villages.

Key activities included a Health Exhibition focusing on diabetes prevention, health screenings for non-communicable diseases, and First Aid and CPR training for community leaders and family representatives from 10 villages, including Kampung Rejang, Kampung Jerijih, Kampung Tusok, and Tanjung Manis.

The programme aims to raise awareness of healthy eating, regular health check-ups, exercise, and basic first aid knowledge among the community.
