MIRI: A support mission led by Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Telang Usan arrived in Long Layang on Monday (Nov 17) with critical assistance for families devastated by last week’s longhouse fire.
The delegation represented Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau.
Each affected household received RM1,000 in emergency relief from Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas as part of a rapid response to stabilise survivors after the blaze reduced the 23-door longhouse to ruins.
Organisations and NGOs worked together to deliver both financial support and essential supplies.
The mood in the village remained heavy as survivors recounted narrow escapes.
The aid was made possible through the combined efforts of Uggah, Dennis, PBB Telang Usan, PPPERTU, WSL Xiang Xiang Sdn Bhd and Pembinaan SSE Sdn Bhd.
Among those on site were former councillor Jarau Braim, PPPERTU chairman Anderson Kalang, Sarawak PBB Youth deputy chief Nathan from Pembinaan SSE, Ketua Kaum Pius Balan, the village security and development committee (JKKK) of Kampung Long Layang, and the fire victims themselves.
The Nov 10 fire claimed the life of a 30-year-old man and left a 60-year-old man with serious burn injuries. The destruction left dozens displaced and the community grappling with both trauma and loss.
