BINTULU: A community awareness programme under the River Recovery (R2) Sungai Plan 2025 successfully brought together local leaders, students and environmental agencies to promote the conservation and sustainable management of Sungai Plan.

Held on Friday at Kemena Plaza Hotel here, the programme carried the theme ‘Sungai Plan Sustainability, A Shared Responsibility’ and was implemented through a collaboration between the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd (MLNG), Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), the Department of Environment (JAS), and Universiti Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS).

The opening ceremony was officiated by Datuk Jack Liam, Sarawak Environmental Quality Controller.

The initiative aims to raise public awareness about the importance of conserving and rehabilitating Sungai Plan while encouraging active participation in environmental sustainability and cleanliness.

Community leaders from Sungai Plan attended the event, alongside students from SK Tanjung Batu and SMK Asyakirin, demonstrating the engagement of young people in environmental education from an early age.

The programme featured a series of educational activities, including an NREB talk on ‘Balancing River Water Quality and the Role of the Local Community’, a BDA session on ‘Solid Waste Management from Home to Disposal Site’, and a Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) presentation titled ‘Crocodile Breeding in Parallel with Waste Management’.

UPMS conducted an environmental awareness module and compost-making workshop to encourage the reuse of organic waste, while NREB organised an Eco Brick Workshop to show how plastic waste can be recycled into building materials.

A ‘Used Cooking Oil Collection’ Campaign was also held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Kemena Plaza parking area in collaboration with Green Town Eco Sdn Bhd.
