BINTULU: Companies operating at the Samalaju Industrial Park (SIP) have been urged to take proactive and responsible steps to address the long-standing parking issues in Bintulu’s commercial areas.
Tanjong Batu Assemblyman, Johnny Pang Leong Ming, said immediate action was necessary to prevent the matter from persisting and affecting community comfort and local economic activities.
“I call on companies that have yet to act to respond quickly and work directly with landowners to secure temporary parking arrangements.
“This will ease the worsening shortage of parking spaces in town, rather than allowing the problem to drag on indefinitely,” he said during a dialogue session with SIP companies on Thursday.
Pang noted that the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) had previously suggested companies rent vacant land for temporary parking, with some firms already showing positive commitment to this measure.
He said the influx of industrial workers’ vehicles into town had reduced public parking availability for customers, affecting local businesses in areas such as J5 Commercial Centre, Bintulu Central, ParkCity, Town Square, and Sungai Plan.
At the same time, Pang supported a proposal from SIP representatives to establish a centralised pick-up and drop-off terminal for workers as a more sustainable long-term solution.
He assured that he would assist in exploring this approach to ensure effective and lasting solutions to Bintulu’s commercial parking challenges.
