KUCHING: A convenience store company was fined RM20,000 today by the Magistrates’ Court after admitting to selling ‘Era Menthol Hijau’ cigarettes below the minimum retail price of RM12 per pack.

The company, represented by Counsel Yong Suk Hui, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan and paid the full fine in court.

The company was charged under Section 14(4) of Control of Tobacco Products for Public Health 2024 (Act 852).

The offence took place at the end of October 2025 during enforcement operations by the State Health Department (JKNS) along Jalan Satok here.

Facts of the case stated that an authorised officer, acting as a provocation agent, purchased a pack of the cigarettes for RM3.30, far below the legally mandated price.

Following the purchase, enforcement officers raided the store and issued a Notice to Appear in Court under Section 47 of the same act.

The case was handled by Prosecution Officer, Dorothy Alak, and Siti Rohayuh Saleh from the JKNS’ Inspection & Legal Section.
