MIRI: A marine coating company here was fined RM25,000 for failing to establish a safe work system, which led to a worker losing his right thumb.

The company, represented by its managing director, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz to the charge under Section 15 (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994.

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak said the company had failed to implement a safe work system for the maintenance of a sand drying machine’s pulley and belting section at the factory, resulting in an accident involving a 32-year-old Malaysian worker.

The accident occurred on Aug 30, 2024, at around 10 am along Jalan Mai Gold area, Desa Senadin.

As a result of the accident, the victim lost his right thumb.

The prosecution was led by DOSH prosecuting officer Mohamad Rafizal Alias while investigations were conducted by officers Noor Hidzir Mohd Noor, Maszdie Gani, and Nelson Pantau Philip Langut.
