SIBU: The organisation of the Sibu RC PowerBoat Race River Challenge 2024 not only elevates Sibu as a premier destination for water sports activities but also promotes the unique culture, heritage, and natural beauty of the area to the world.

According to Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, he highly values initiatives such as this because they support the nation’s agenda in promoting domestic tourism.

“This event is not merely a competitive platform but also an opportunity to foster community bonds, boost the tourism sector, and create economic opportunities for the local population.

“Sibu, known for the uniqueness of the Rajang River, the longest river in Malaysia at 773 kilometres, is an ideal location for hosting such events.

“The Rajang River is not only the lifeblood of the community but also a symbol of Sarawak’s rich culture and traditions. Through this event, we can not only appreciate the natural beauty but also highlight the potential of water sports as a major tourism attraction,” he said.

He said this in his text speech read by his special officer Agatha Ting during the event’s launch at the Pulau Li Hua Waterfront here on Friday.

Tiong, who is also the Dudong assemblyman, said that the government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Malaysia, would continue to provide unwavering support for such initiatives.

“We are committed to empowering the sports tourism sector, including water sports, as a key component of the national tourism industry.

“This, in turn, will enhance international promotion through digital platforms and tourism campaigns to attract more international visitors to Sarawak,” he said.

He emphasised that sports tourism not only benefits the tourism sector but also creates job opportunities, increases local incomes, and promotes a healthy lifestyle among the people.

“I believe this event will continue to grow into a larger and more prestigious annual event, capable of attracting more participants and tourists from within and outside the country.

“With strong support from all parties, I am confident it will have a positive impact on the development of tourism and Sibu’s economy,” he added.

The event also attracted participants from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, and Brunei, in addition to local participants, with a total of 516 remote-controlled boats this year.

Next year, the event aims to attract over 1,000 remote-controlled boats.
