COMPUTER Science and Design subjects will be taught fully in English for Sarawak’s Dual Language Programme (DLP) students beginning 2029, following approval from the Ministry of Education (MOE).

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the decision was reached through ongoing engagements under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), marking a step forward in strengthening the DLP pathway in Sarawak.

He noted that the first cohort of Sarawak DLP students is currently in Form One and will reach Form Four in 2029, when the policy takes effect.

“This is a significant achievement that strengthens the continuity of the Sarawak DLP pathway and supports Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning.

“My ministry is currently working closely with the Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS) and MOE to ensure full readiness for implementation, including teacher preparedness and delivery support mechanisms,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech at the august House today (May 18).

During a press conference shortly after, Sagah said both subjects are highly relevant to STEM fields, with Computer Science closely linked to programming languages and systems that are predominantly English-based.

He added that Design, particularly in the context of structural and engineering applications, also aligns with scientific disciplines rather than purely artistic fields.

On a related matter, he said the Sarawak Education Enhancement Programme (SEEP) has been expanded to include Form One and Form Two students, in addition to Forms Three to Five.

With this expansion, he said the programme is expected to benefit 112,616 students across 186 schools statewide.

“This expansion reflects our continued commitment to early intervention, particularly in strengthening foundational competencies and improving readiness for upper secondary education and ultimately the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM),” he added.
