KUCHING: Sarawak is beginning to be a not-to-be-missed entertainment and tourism destination, thanks to the many successful large scale concerts hosted by the state.
It is riding on the wave of this success with more concerts on the cards, including one in October which will feature a famous performer from the United States.
An elated Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the net effect of these concerts is a tangible increase in visitor arrivals.
The success of these events not only brings joy to local fans but also attracts tourists from neighbouring countries, he said, noting that cities like Kuching and Miri have become major attractions for visitors seeking not only world-class entertainment but also local tourism experiences.
“Events like these have a significant impact, not just on the entertainment sector, but also in creating opportunities for economic growth and boosting Sarawak’s global recognition.
“With various major events planned, Sarawak is increasingly proving itself to be an unmissable destination for entertainment and tourism enthusiasts,” he said after attending the ‘Nidji: Pelangi in Kuching Concert 2025’ on Saturday.
Abdul Karim said that whenever an event in Kuching features performers well-known in neighbouring countries, there is a noticeable increase in the number of vehicles crossing into Sarawak via the borders.
For example, during the New Year’s Eve countdown event last December, the Tebedu Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex experienced traffic congestion for three consecutive days, as Indonesians flocked to Sarawak to watch Hetty Koes Endang’s performance.
“A similar situation occurred in Miri during Nidji’s performance last year, where the turnout from fans in Brunei Darussalam was very encouraging,” he added.
He also shared details of upcoming concerts, with three major events scheduled to take place in Miri this May.
The first concert will be held on May 17, organised by TVS, followed by another on May 21, organised by Astro, and finally a performance on May 25 featuring an artiste from Indonesia.
All three concerts, he said, will take place at the Miri Indoor Stadium.
“I am confident that these concerts will continue to attract visitors from Brunei.
Additionally, the Sarawak government is planning to bring a famous artiste from the United States for an exclusive performance in Kuching this October.
“Meanwhile, the legendary group, Earth, Wind & Fire, will be performing at the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2025.
“And it is important that we also involve local artistes in every major event to promote talent development and strengthen the local creative industry,” he added.
