KUCHING: The Asia Carbon Conference 2023 (ACC 2023) is an exceptional industrial event which holds the potential to shape the future of the Asian carbon market and related sustainability initiatives.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the conference will set the stage for pivotal policymaking decisions, cutting-edge investment opportunities and innovative technologies that will shape the carbon market.

“This conference is the first of its kind in Asia to gather top industry leaders for carbon offsetting and trading in a rapidly growing global market.

“I am glad to see delegates from various countries come together to network and exchange ideas and information on fundamental questions about carbon offsets.

“At the same time, I am delighted to note that this conference boasts an impressive lineup of speakers from several countries, namely the United Kingdom, Norway, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, providing a diverse and global perspective,” Abang Jo said in his keynote address during the launching of the ACC2023 at Pullman Hotel here today.

Abang Johari, who is also the Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, pointed out that carbon trading and carbon markets are crucial components of the global effort to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

The premier said the growth of carbon markets has been nothing short of remarkable with the global carbon market value at approximately US$277 billion in 2021.

“This is a testament to the fact that businesses and governments around the world recognise the importance of reducing carbon emissions and are committed to taking action.

“However, the road ahead is still long and challenging. We need to continue pushing for more ambitious and comprehensive climate policies, investing in renewable energy sources, and adopting sustainable practices in all aspects of our lives.

“This will require a collective effort with governments, businesses and individuals all playing a crucial role in achieving our shared goals,” he said.

As such, Abang Johari called on participants of the ACC2023 to seize the opportunity to come together to learn, exchange ideas and build meaningful partnerships.

“Let us inspire each other to take bold and decisive action to combat climate change and create a sustainable future for generations to come,” he said.
