MUKAH: The Environmentally Friendly Drainage Master Plan (PISMA) for Mukah will help identify long-term solutions to the flood problems in the town.

Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine, said the master plan has been approved by the Federal Government under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) First Rolling Plan (RP1).

“The findings from this master plan study will help identify long-term solutions to address flooding issues in Mukah Town and will form the basis for future funding applications to implement the proposed mitigation measures,” he said.

He said this when met after conducting an inspection of drain cleaning works and rainwater catchment areas at Jalan Pinang here on Tuesday.

Elaborating further, he explained that long-term solutions for the issue were presented by the Sarawak Government during the recent State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting.

Commenting on the programme earlier, he said the cleaning works involved the Jalan Pinang area, the entire Mukah Market, Kampung Pinang and nearby housing estates that are often affected by flash floods during heavy rain.

“The works are currently being carried out by the responsible agencies — the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and the Dalat and Mukah District Council (MDDM) — as immediate measures to smoothen water flow and reduce flood risks,” he said.

Royston expressed his appreciation to the Mukah Division Resident, Datuk Kueh Lei Poh, for the swift action taken on the complaint submitted, which was addressed within less than 24 hours.
