Leadership plays a significant role in any field – whether in politics, sports, or business. A leader must set clear goals and foster teamwork, and get everyone on the same page.

Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sports Minister

Sarawak will once again get the opportunity to prove its unparalleled host capabilities as it takes on the mantle of co-hosting the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2027. With the opening ceremony confirmed to be held in Kuching, this major sports event in SEA cements Sarawak’s position as a key player in the regional sporting arena.

This is not merely an opportunity to host another sports event, it is an affirmation of the state’s growing influence and its commitment to sports as a medium for unity and development.

Putrajaya’s approval of Kuching as the venue for the SEA Games’ grand opening was announced with great pride by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg recently.

The decision comes as no surprise, given Sarawak’s impeccable track record in hosting national and international sporting events. From the 1990 and 2016 Sukma Games to the recent 2024 edition – widely seen as the best ever – Sarawak has proven time and again its capacity to deliver world-class events.

In addition to national events, Sarawak has also hosted several prestigious international competitions. The 21st Asia Masters Athletics Championship (AMAC) in 2019 brought together seasoned athletes from across the continent, while the 9th World Paralympic Swimming Championship in the same year highlighted Sarawak’s inclusivity and commitment to parasports.

Looking ahead, Kuching is set to co-host the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Cricket in 2025, with teams from New Zealand, Nigeria, Samoa, and South Africa competing on the newly built Borneo Cricket Ground in Petra Jaya. Moreover, the revival of the Borneo Games in 2025 will further portray Sarawak’s dedication to fostering regional sporting camaraderie.

Sarawak’s preparations for the 2027 SEA Games is a display of not only its logistical prowess but also its visionary leadership under Sports Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

A cycling enthusiast and avid Liverpool supporter, Abdul Karim has been instrumental in balancing the demands of his political office with his passion for sports. His efforts to promote sports as a healthy pastime are proof of his determination that infrastructure development and societal progress often go hand in hand.

Under his care, Sarawak has seen the emergence of cutting-edge sports facilities and grassroots initiatives aimed at nurturing young talent.

The state’s ability to manage such events reflects a broader determination by the government to integrate sports into its development agenda. Beyond the glittering arenas and cheering crowds, sports serve as a powerful tool for social cohesion and youth empowerment.

Abang Johari has frequently stressed the importance of investing in sports, viewing events like the SEA Games as avenues to project Sarawak’s development to the world. “For me, co-hosting the SEA Games is another form of investment,” he said at the 2024 Sukma appreciation night, recently. “We want to share that our development extends beyond Sarawak’s borders, and even beyond Malaysia.”

This vision is backed by tangible action. Sarawak has already begun upgrading its sports infrastructure to meet the rigorous demands of hosting the SEA Games. Venues across the state are being prepared to accommodate at least half of the 36 sports that will be contested in the biennial event.

The strategic positioning of these venues is expected to distribute the economic benefits of the Games more evenly, boosting local tourism and commerce while leaving behind a legacy of modernised facilities.

Sarawak’s approach to the 2027 SEA Games also highlights its ability to unite stakeholders across sectors. The federal and state governments have collaborated closely to ensure the success of this event, with Sarawak stepping up as a co-sponsor. Such cooperation shows the mutual recognition of the Games’ potential to not only elevate Malaysia’s standing in the region but also to inspire a new generation of athletes.

The state’s focus on sports as a driver of development is not new. Sarawak has long been committed to fostering a culture of athletic excellence. From its investments in state-of-the-art training facilities to its support for grassroots programmes, the government has laid a robust foundation for nurturing talent.

The success of our athletes on national and international stages portrays our determination and commitment. At the 21st SUKMA Games, Sarawak emerged as a powerhouse, earning accolades for its athletes’ performances and its organisational skills.

Sports also play a key role in promoting inclusivity in Sarawak. Events like the World Paralympic Swimming Championship demonstrate the state’s dedication to creating opportunities for athletes of all abilities. This inclusive approach aligns with Sarawak’s broader vision of development, which prioritises equity and social well-being.

The 2027 SEA Games will undoubtedly serve as a platform for Sarawak to further this agenda. With its rich cultural heritage and diverse communities, the state is uniquely positioned to use the Games as a showcase for its identity and values.

The opening ceremony in Kuching promises to be a spectacle that celebrates not only athletic achievement but also the spirit of unity that defines the SEA Games.

The role of sports in Sarawak extends beyond the immediate thrill of competition. It serves as a conduit for community building, economic growth, and international recognition. By hosting events like the SEA Games, Sarawak is not only investing in infrastructure and tourism but also in the intangible assets of pride and unity among its people.

As the countdown to 2027 begins, our preparations are a reminder of the transformative power of sports. Under the able leadership of figures like Abang Johari and Abdul Karim, we are poised to deliver an event that will leave an indelible mark on the region.

Sarawak’s journey to the SEA Games is not just about hosting another sporting event; it is about building a legacy of excellence, unity and progress that will inspire Sarawakians.
