KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here ordered yesterday a young male offender to attend Henry Gurney School until he reaches the age of 21, after he pleaded guilty to stealing 5.92 metres of copper cable belonging to Telekom Malaysia last August.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali ordered the 20-year-old accused to attend Henry Gurney School after hearing a social report from the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia (JKM) yesterday.
According to the charge, he allegedly committed the offence in front of a government building on Diplomatik Road, around 11.45 pm on August 3.
The accused was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both, if found guilty.
According to the facts of the case, at the time of the incident, the complainant, a police officer, and his colleague were on a crime prevention patrol in the area when they encountered two suspicious-looking men.
While approaching the two men, the complainant found that they had stolen copper cable belonging to Telekom Malaysia.
One of the men managed to escape, but the accused was caught and found with items believed to be used for theft.
The items seized as evidence included a roll of copper cable measuring 5.92 metres, a cable cutter, a cable puller unit, a screwdriver, modified pliers, a motorcycle, a wrench, and a collared shirt.
The estimated loss incurred by the company is approximately RM500.
Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad led the prosecution, and the accused did not have a lawyer.
