KUCHING: Ten locals, including three men, were arrested for allegedly selling imitation firearms during ‘Ops Laras’ raids last Saturday.
Acting on public tip-offs, police raided five toy stores in Kuching and Kota Samarahan, and seized a total of 137 imitation firearms.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the suspects, comprising three men and seven women, aged between 19 and 46, were taken into custody.
“Among the items seized were 70 imitation pistols, 67 imitation rifles, and 344 packets and 18 bottles containing plastic bullets.
“The case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which provides for imprisonment for a term of up to one year or a fine up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction,” he said in a statement.
In light of this, Mancha reminded the public that the possession, purchase or sale of imitation firearms is a criminal offence, regardless of intent.
He also assured that police will continue to conduct operations and monitor the illegal sale of imitation firearms throughout Sarawak.
Those with any information regarding such activities, are encouraged to contact the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) at 011-15696554 or the nearest police station.
