KUCHING: Police arrested six individuals believed to be part of a scam syndicate operating a fake online gaming scheme during a raid at a shop lot along Jalan Tun Jugah here on February 4.
The suspects, including two women, aged between 18 and were detained at about 2.13pm in an operation by the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Kuching district police headquarters.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said initial investigations found the group was operating as a calling centre promoting non-existent online games using a ‘Multi WhatsApp Warmer’ application, targeting local victims.
“Police seized computers, mobile phones, SIM cards and related devices believed to have been used in the fraudulent activities.
“All suspects are believed to have worked full-time for the syndicate,” he said in a statement.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and Section 120(b) for criminal conspiracy.
The suspects were brought before the Kuching Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (Feb 5) and remanded for four days to assist investigations.
