KUCHING: Police are currently exploring more effective ways to combat online gambling, including the possible blocking of gambling websites and systems to curb illegal activity.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Zainal Abdullah said online gambling operates through digital systems, allowing players to access platforms from anywhere using gadgets.
“We are looking at how to block these websites and systems. If we succeed, no one will be able to gamble online.
“Hence, we need to find the weak points, and if we could have a device to block such websites and systems, it could be much easier.
“This is what we are currently studying — how to take more effective action against online gambling,” he said when asked on the current gambling situation in Sarawak this morning.
Zainal added that some online gambling operations are run covertly from premises such as coffee shops and convenience stores using top-up systems, making it difficult to gather evidence under existing laws.
He pointed out that the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 needs to be reviewed to reflect modern trends and technologies, as the current legislation does not adequately cover evidence collection for online gambling cases.
“The government is in the process of amending the law to ensure cases can be effectively proven in court and those involved can be successfully prosecuted,” he said.
Linking gambling to drug abuse, Zainal warned that both activities can lead to other crimes, as perpetrators need money to continue their involvement.
“Gambling is like a disease or cancer in society. No one becomes rich from playing; only the organisers profit.
“Public awareness is critical to prevent people from getting involved,” he said, urging communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities.
He assured that law enforcement will continue to take firm action against all involved in illegal gambling and drug activities.
