LAWAS: Police thwarted a local man’s bold attempt to smuggle suspected methamphetamine worth RM50,000 at Merapok ICQS entry point on Wednesday.

The arrest was made at around 6.45 am when the 49-year-old, who is unemployed, was driving a car alone from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, into Lawas

Lawas Police Chief, DSP Liong Tindan, said further checks led to the discovery of five plastic packets of various sizes containing crystalline substances believed to be methamphetamine.

“The seized drugs weighed 252.33 grammes and has an estimate market value of around RM50,000. Both the suspect and drugs as well as the vehicle used was taken to the police station for further action,” he said.

Background checks found that the suspect has no prior criminal record, and a urine screening test returned positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Liong stressed that police, particularly the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID), will continue to intensify efforts to curb drug trafficking and abuse.

Members of the public with information on drug-related activities are urged to report them to Bukit Aman NCID hotline at 012-208 7222 or Sarawak NCID hotline at 017-592 9211.
