SIBU: Police have launched an investigation for suspected negligence following the death of a two-year-old boy who is believed to have fallen into an uncovered manhole along Jalan Wong Soon Kai here on Monday.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the case is being investigated under Section 3(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect or exposing a child in a manner likely to cause physical or emotional injury.

The offence carries a maximum fine of RM20,000, a jail term of up to 10 years, or both, upon conviction.

A second investigation has also been opened and is classified as a sudden death report (SDR).

“The case came to our attention after receiving a report from a medical officer at Sibu Hospital at 11.09 pm.

“The boy was found unconscious in the manhole by firefighters and rushed to the hospital,” he said.

Doctors at the emergency unit found the victim soaking wet, pale and unresponsive. He was later confirmed dead.

Zulkipli added that further investigations are ongoing to identify any individual or party who may be responsible.

Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact investigating officer ASP Mohd Adzmei Ahmad at 019-7192529 or go to the nearest police station.
