Cops released on bail

SIBU: Two policemen were released on a bail of RM3,000 in two sureties each by the Sessions Court yesterday after they pleaded not guilty to gang robbery.

Justice Caroline Bee Majanil ordered that the two accused, Mohd Redzuan Kamaruddin, 34, and Mohd Sham Lamunir, 50, to be present in court again on January 7, 2020 for case management.

Both were charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code which provides for an imprisonment of up to 20 years and also liable to whipping.

According to the brief facts of the case, about 4.30pm on October 23 at Sungai Bidut, the two accused in a police MPV car stopped a car.

They then robbed the two individuals in the car, Muhammad Ismail Zamhari and Mohamad Syukran Suraimie of RM750 and 10 cartons of smuggled cigarettes.

The case is prosecuted by DPP Sangari Ponam while the accused persons were represented by counsel, Augustine Liom.
