Cops uncover RM6.2 mil worth of illegal frozen meat

BINTULU: A man has been arrested after marine police uncovered a hidden stockpile of frozen meat worth over RM6.2 million at a premises in an industrial area last week.

The discovery was made during a raid conducted under Ops Taring Khazanah along Jalan Sultan Iskandar on May 15, following gathered intelligence.

Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 acting commander Supt Rusdin Banin said the operation led to the seizure of various types of frozen meat suspected to have been illegally imported and stored for distribution in the local market.

He stated that a man, believed to be the owner of the premises, was detained.

“The seizure, worth at an estimated RM6.2 million, makes it one of the largest confiscations to date involving undocumented frozen food products.

“Further checks revealed that the premises was being used as a storage facility for frozen meat without valid documentation,” he said.

Both the suspect and the seizures were handed over to the Bintulu Veterinary Division for further actions.

The case is being investigated under the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999, Control of Supplies Act 1961, Environmental Quality Act 2012, and Food Act 1983.

Supt Rusdin also urged the public to continue channelling information to the authorities in efforts to combat smuggling activities that pose a serious threat to food safety and public health.
