SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is bringing the magic of Disneyland to town with this year’s annual Christmas celebration, themed Fairytale Christmas Wonderland.
Breaking from tradition, where a giant Christmas tree would typically be erected at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1, this year’s festivities feature a grand, colourful castle, adding an enchanting touch to the event.
SMC chairman Clarence Ting emphasised that the celebration aimed to strengthen community bonds and attract visitors to Sibu.
“It is our pleasure at SMC to organise such an event for everyone in Sibu and the central region of Sarawak.
“We hope you’ll join us to celebrate Christmas. This is also an opportunity for community building, bringing together our diverse communities of different religions and faiths to end the year in unity,” he said during the lighting-up ceremony held at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang here on Friday night.
Meanwhile, organising chairman Councillor Simon Wee, expressed his hope that the celebration would draw more visitors to this town.
“The lighting-up ceremony marks the start of Sibu’s annual Christmas Festival.
“With all the exciting elements we’ve introduced this year, we hope to attract more tourists, especially domestic visitors, to experience the vibrant Christmas atmosphere we’ve created,” he said.
Wee also shared his aspiration for future events in Sibu to become key attractions, drawing tourists to the town year after year.
