SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has identified roads and drainage systems affected by the recent floods that have hit the town since the beginning of the year.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting said the council had taken proactive steps by requesting funds for necessary repairs, including raising roads that are frequently flooded.

“Sadly, we cannot say that Sibu has had a happy start to the year, as many have experienced severe flooding over the past ten days. Floodwaters have entered homes and roads, causing significant hardship,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the SMC Chinese New Year 2025 celebration, officiated by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang representing Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, at a renowned hotel here today (Feb 8).

Ting added that efforts are underway to repair potholes and other damages, urging the public to report any related issues to the council.

“There is extensive damage, and we need your cooperation to ensure it is fixed as soon as possible,” he said.

He also noted that areas under the jurisdiction of the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), particularly Stabau and Sungai Bidut, were more severely impacted by the floods.

“This year has begun on a C note, with floodwaters everywhere. However, as the Chinese proverb says, ‘Water brings prosperity.’ Despite these challenges, I sincerely hope that the Year of the Snake will bring prosperity to us all in 2025,” he said.

Ting also announced the official launch of body cameras for SMC enforcement officers, an initiative aimed at strengthening the council’s enforcement efforts.

“A few days ago, the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) introduced body cameras for their enforcement officers. Since we have had them for a year, I believe now is the right time to launch them officially. SMC currently has five body camera units,” he said.
