KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is strengthening its cooperation with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to address crime and social issues, following a courtesy visit by Datuk Mohammad Shaharul Md Osman, Chief Assistant Director of the Extremist and Social Threats Division, Bukit Aman.
MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the council is fully committed to working hand in hand with the police to ensure public safety.
“We share the same goal of keeping Kuching safe and harmonious, and MBKS is ever ready to work with PDRM in addressing crimes and social ills,” he said.
A key concern raised during the meeting was the rise in online gambling activities here, with some operations running from physical shopfronts disguised as coffee shops or convenience stores.
Wee urged the Members of Parliament for Kuching and Stampin to push for firm action from the Minister for Home Affairs and the Minister for Communications and Multimedia, stressing that enforcement must go beyond parliamentary debates.
“Immediate and decisive enforcement action is needed, not just statements that can be diluted among the many issues raised by 222 MPs,” he emphasised.
Wee also briefed the delegation on MBKS’ existing safety measures, which include installing CCTVs at strategic locations, deploying police wardens for traffic control, and conducting joint monitoring with enforcement agencies against illegal activities.
“A safe city is the foundation of a thriving community.
“Through stronger collaboration with PDRM, coupled with firm and immediate enforcement action, we can safeguard Kuching for all its residents,” Wee said.
