KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (PMC) will wait for an official directive from the state Ministry of Local Government and Housing (MLGH) on the issuance of compounds to violators of the pandemic standard operating procedures (SOPs).

PMC chairman Lo Khere Chiang said although the directive has been in effect since March 11, Sarawak local councils have not yet received any directive from the state government with regards to the federal government’s decision to allow officers from statutory bodies or local councils to issue compounds.

“As chairman, I say we will do what the federal government wants, but at this moment we have not received any directive to fine SOP violators RM10,000 each. So, we wait for the instructions-lah,” he said in a casual interview with Siti Nadya Hassani from Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) broadcast live on his Facebook page today (March 14).

He was referring to one of the amendments and new provisions under the Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021.

Section 25 of Act 342 has been amended to increase the original compound rate for offences from the maximum RM1,000 to RM10,000 for individuals and not more than RM50,000 for corporate bodies.

The amendment also allows officers from statutory bodies or local councils to issue the compounds.
