KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is focusing on widening smaller drains in flood-prone areas as part of ongoing efforts to curb sudden water level rises during prolonged rainy periods.
MPP chairman Cr Tan Kai said several drainage stretches around Batu Kawa have been upgraded through excavation works carried out with the help of JCB Engineering Sdn Bhd.
“We always help residents by clearing clogged drains with the support of JCB machinery, and we also assist in facilitating the implementation of projects by the Sarawak Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID),” he told reporters when met at the Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (YAPEIM) contribution handover ceremony at Kampung Sinar Budi here yesterday (Jan 22).
Tan said while major drainage projects fall under DID’s responsibility, MPP continues to play an active role on the ground, especially during emergencies.
“And when floods occur, we also focus on providing assistance at temporary evacuation centres (PPS), including cleaning and other necessary facilities,” he said.
“MPP’s flood response typically includes providing logistical support such as large rubbish bins, mobile toilets and other basic facilities, alongside efforts to help communities manage immediate flood-related challenges.
“We always help the people during floods and this is part of our routine. Thus, coordinated action among agencies remains crucial during disaster situations,” he said.
He said Sarawak continues to require assistance in community development, in line with the state’s aspirations under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).
“Sarawak needs a lot of support in terms of community development and many other areas. Under PCDS 2030, one of the key principles is that no one will be left behind,” he said.
Tan expressed gratitude with the support from agencies such as YAPEIM to help Sarawak strengthen its efforts to ensure vulnerable communities receive the assistance they need, especially during flood seasons.
“YAPIEM’s presence here with us today aligns with the spirit of ‘no one will be left behind’.
“Thank you to YAPEIM for helping us ensure that no one is left out,” he said.
